The new WAVES & WOODS issue is here!

In the latest issue of Waves & Woods, you’ll find a special founder story about Aloha Coffee. In an interview with Lars Jacobsen, our two founders talk about how the brand began, its connection to surf culture, and the values behind every cup.

California-based photographer Grant Musso—who saves lives as a paramedic in real life—shoots almost exclusively on film, and preferably in the water. With a Nikonos, patience, and an eye for that one decisive moment. No burst mode, no digital spray-and-pray. Instead: hours in the lineup. And once the roll is full, it’s back to shore. In the interview, Grant talks about his path into photography, the balance between a demanding job and creative freedom, and why he chooses to work more slowly… like us—which is also why this issue didn’t come out back in December (ahem).

Story number two takes us far north. Snowdrift tells the story of four women traveling around Tromsø on an old sailing yacht: ski touring straight from the boat, the midnight sun, and the best time of their lives. A journey that shows how close sea and mountains can feel—if you have the courage to truly follow through on an idea.

In the next story, we revisit the old question: “Is it okay to photograph secret spots and post them online?”—sparked by our go-to photographer from Canada, who brought us his piece “Locals vs Photos.” Marcus Paladino takes an honest look at this sensitive topic: cameras on the beach, mistrust, localism, and whether smartphones today can do more harm than classic surf photography ever did.

In North Carolina, WAWO team member Carsten Schmidt takes us on a journey off the usual routes. Between rum distilleries, mountain towns, and brewery districts, he meets people who show just how diverse this state really is.

Next up: “Ghost Diving.” Volunteer divers recovering ghost nets from the North and Baltic Seas—making a real difference, one mission at a time. It’s about technique, motivation, and what happens after the recovery.

If you’re into surf history, you’ll love “Fiberglass Dreams.” In Tenerife, our friend Jerome Harlay talks about iconic vintage surfboards, collector passion, and what these old boards might be worth today. A love letter to craftsmanship and fiberglass time capsules.

The issue is rounded out by “Living Wild,” featuring an extraordinary house project south of Johannesburg. And “The Artist” this time is the incredibly talented illustrator Blake Gordon.

132 pages, printed on heavy paper—meant to be enjoyed slowly, without rush. Please take your time, look a little closer, and don’t stress. It’s not healthy!

Enjoy Issue #45.
